I think there are certain things in life that one should never talk about with friends, colleagues, or people that you even have a general interest in getting to know better. One of these being religion/faith/spirituality, I have seen many different arguments over a religious element, whether it be between two people who share the same beliefs or people who come from completely different backgrounds, there are a few things that remain constant. People think that they are being objective and not letting their beliefs color their opinions, but the fact that they decided to get in to a confrontation about religion shows their lack of ability to be objective. Another common point about religious arguments is that they tend to focus on the positives of their religion and the negatives of the opposing religion, but there is never a critical eye turned towards the religion that one is supporting. In every religion there are points that people like to keep hidden, and most of the time people hide these points that put their religion in an unfavorable light out of their minds. When in a true argument one can use the unfavorable points to make a counter argument that brings the opposition to its knees.
There is never a true winner in a discussion such as this. We all come out with the same beliefs just a little greyer. Whenever I have had a discussion and it even seems as though it could go the way of a discussion on religion I cut my losses and leave it be because I like having friends.
